Hitting play on this live recording of Devo from a period in which they were in cultural and creative ascendancy immediately transports you to a time when music was fundamentally, at its core, absolutely fucking wild. 'Secret Agent Man' opens the set with strange warped noises that make you feel like the room is sinking or melting, slowly peeling away to reveal the true nature of our universe in all its atomised crazy. Simply put, the Ohio counter cultural icons quickly created a visceral, dense and authentic artistic world for themselves, then invited us to live in it - at least for a few brief, fleeting moments of unhinged joy. Half surrealist interpretive comedy show, wryly satirical in their commentary, and batshit crazy in term of the actual sounds being made - lo-fi sci-fi does new wave - it's only when you're faced with such mind-boggling madness that you realise how insane the 21st Century's obsession with grey conformity is.
