PETER MAAG conducts the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra

Thanks to Classicstoday.com
"Despite a promising introduction in the mid-1960s (this recording was made in 1965) the name of Edith Peinemann is virtually unknown today outside the "violin crowd", where she enjoys a solid reputation as a teacher in her native Germany. And no, she wasn't (on evidence here) a world-beating virtuoso. Her tone is a touch thin, and she adopts moderate tempos throughout the work. But it's a wonderful performance nonetheless, because although she doesn't dazzle technically, her rhythmic sense is second to none, and so is conductor Peter Maag's. Throw in the Czech Philharmonic in vintage form (these were the Ancerl days), and the result is a performance full of character, one that sounds like no other.
"In particular, if you pay attention to the interplay between soloist and orchestra in the outer movements you will hear a wealth of details found nowhere else, and in the final analysis that's why you listen to multiple versions of the same work, isn't it? So while this may not be the "best" version ever recorded, it's an extremely collectible one..."
