Cameroonian jazz-funk saxophonist Manu Dibango owes much of his later success to the infectious, righteous and downright funky 'Soul Makossa'. A dancefloor hit from the start, it became Dibangoi's calling card, inspired countless remakes, and holds the record for being the most sampled African record of all time. Here, we get a fresh pressing of the 1972 album on which it features, Dibango's first international hit LP. It remains a righteous fusion of Afro-funk and Afro-jazz, with highlights including the flanged guitars and lolloping grooves of 'New Bell', the relaxed, reggae-influenced headiness of 'Hibiscus' (a fusion style he later explored on the Reggae Makossa album), and the low-slung Afrobeat shuffle of 'Lily'.
