Philadelphia, Pa.: H. Royer Smith Co. Philadelphia Disques was a classical music and records magazine published by Philadelphia record retailer H. Royer Smith from March 1930 until June 1932, after which it was replaced by "The New Records". Isaac Goldberg was a prominent American journalist, polyglot, critic, and Harvard-educated scholar who became a major figure in early 20th-century cultural criticism. He was widely celebrated as an early authority on modern Spanish-American literature and served as a premier biographer for iconic cultural giants, publishing foundational early biographies on H.L. Mencken, George Gershwin, Havelock Ellis, and the theatrical duo Gilbert & Sullivan. Herbert F. Peyser (1889–1953)
Herbert F. Peyser was a highly regarded American music critic, author, and musicologist who served as a European correspondent for The New York Times, chief music critic for Musical America, and program annotator for the New York Philharmonic-Symphony Society. Educated at Columbia University, his widely distributed biographical monographs on master composers like Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert, and Johann Sebastian Bach bridged the gap between strict scholarly research and public music appreciation. Joseph Cottler (1899–1996)
Joseph Cottler was a prominent Philadelphia-born author, biographer, and educator celebrated for his engaging non-fiction works chronicling human progress. He wrote heavily praised biographical anthologies and narratives mapping the historical impact of cultural, scientific, and global figures, co-authoring the acclaimed "Heroes of Civilization" in 1932, alongside other enduring works such as "Map-Makers" (1936) and "Man with Wings: The Story of Leonardo da Vinci" (1945).
