Free Ride is a 1977 jazz-fusion album by trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie, composed, arranged, and produced by his longtime collaborator Lalo Schifrin. Recorded in Hollywood, the album merges Gillespie's legendary bebop trumpet with a slick 1970s disco-soul, funky groove, utilizing synthesizers and electric guitars.
The Backstory and Recording
Reunion: Dizzy Gillespie and Lalo Schifrin’s history went back to 1956, when Gillespie discovered Schifrin in Argentina. Schifrin later moved to the U.S. and became Gillespie’s pianist and arranger. Free Ride was their first major collaboration together since 1962.
The Style: By 1977, Schifrin was famous for his hit TV and film scores (like Mission: Impossible). He infused Gillespie's trumpet playing with funky, pop-soul riffs, ARP synthesizers, and thick arrangements.
The Studio Band: The album utilized top studio musicians in Los Angeles. Notable players included legendary guitarists Lee Ritenour, Ray Parker Jr., and "Wah Wah Watson," as well as saxophonist Ernie Watts.
