Django Reinhardt was born in Liberchies, Belgium on 23 January 1910. The rambling gypsy lifestyle of his Manouche family meant he would spend the majority of his youth on the outskirts of Paris after his mother's people settled at a gypsy camp near the Choisy Gate when Django was eight. It was a world of contradictions. On the one hand was the intoxicating influence of a bustling 1920s Paris with all it had to offer, on the other the almost medieval lifestyle of Django's nomadic Manouche upbringing. However, fused with a prodigious musical talent and an environment where it could flourish, it was to prove a potent combination. A nomadic spirit whose life became a never-ending quest to journey to wherever his precious talent would take him, Django Reinhardt will forever be revered as one of the most unique, gifted and influential musicians of the 20th century.
