Paris 1945  is the musical scene of four remarkable jazz sides recorded in Paris in 1945 and featuring guitarist Django Reinhardt along with five members of Glenn Miller's Army Air Force big band.

On January 25, 1945, Reinhardt recorded four tunes with BerniePrivin on trumpet, Peanuts Hucko on tenor saxophone, Mel Powell on piano, Josz Schulman on bass and Ray McKinley on drums. In addition to these four tracks, the same session included four tracks of Hucko playing clarinet with a trio, and several tracks of Powell on solo piano.

The Glenn Miller band arrived in Paris in December 1944 and the band members were all soldiers of the United States Army Air Forces, therefore military regulations prohibited them from making commercial recordings. An outfit of this band, the "Uptown Hall Gang"  recorded in Paris for ABC records (Collection du Jazz Club Française) and this led to a curious personnel listing on the original sides that mentioned no musician by name. Django's accompanists were called the Jazz Club Mystery Hot Band, and the members were listed as U, V, W, Y and Z. Django himself was labelled as X (see label scans).   Later reissues properly credited Glenn Miller's All Stars, the Ray McKinley Trio and Mel Powell.

3 little needle drops and 2 tiny scratches on "Blue Skies" produce several clicks, but no stick or jump.

78s GRADING CODE

Grading is VISUAL, under a bright light. My code ,in red includes only general wear (Greying, surface wear) and light scratches. All other damages are especially indicated and are not part of the grading below (corresponding to VJM codein yellow).

        1  =   M   (Mint): never played on gramophone /phonograph but is not used in my 78s auctions. 

       1-2 = NM  (Near Mint): top copy, no traces of use, virtually as new.

          2  =     E+   (Excellent plus): exellent copy, a few light, non-sounding rubs/marks 

          2-3 =    E   (Excellent):  light traces of wear (rubs/marks), very light greying and/or very light scratches.

           3  =    E-  (excellent minus):  a good average copy  with more noticeable rubs and , marks, light greying, scratches possible.  

     3-4 =  V+  (very Good plus):  more traces of use, sonic wear from light greying. a minor average copy, scratches possible.

         4  =   V   (very Good):  some sounding wear with little distorsion, heavy rubs and marks , scratches possible.

         5  =   V - (very Good minus):  obvious sounding wear with distorsion , heavy rubs, marks, scratches, sealed cracks. an unsatisfactory copy for documentary purposes.  

Sometime a + or - after the grading number accentuate my personal valuation of the expressed grading, enhancing an expected better or worse aural playing.
