It's hard not to feel transported by Thomas Dolby's 1982 debut album, The Golden Age of Wireless. Landing at a time when electronic music was starting to mainstream and rock was approaching a new wave, tracks straddle sounds and movements, sonics and styles. Partly influenced by the surrealist glam of what had preceded, the raw experimentation of the era itself, and early blueprints for synth pop and rock. Perhaps more so, though, there's a big stage aesthetic that;'s thoroughly artsy in a high culture, operatic kind of way. Songs feel anything but DIY, certainly up against what was starting to emanate from cities like Sheffield at the time, and instead come with a polished stadium-leaning sound that could be seen as a precursor to rock scene that blew up later the same decade.
