Description
HERE IS an admirably serviceable copy of "DOWN WHERE THE SWANEE RIVER FLOWS," sung by "The World's Greatest Entertainer," AL JOLSON.
Written in 1916 by a stalwart team of Tin-Pan-Alley veterans - lyricists Charles S. Alberte and Charles McCarron, with composer Albert von Tilzer - this song nevertheless went nowhere despite such a starry sendoff. The river flowed in obscurity for four years, until George Gershwin's "Swanee" came along.
The flip side actually is more famous from a songwriting perspective, "THEY MADE IT TWICE AS NICE AS PARADISE AND THEY CALLED IT DIXIELAND." Sung by JAMES HARRISON and JAMES REED, it's an early effort by RICHARD WHITING, who went on to compose the music for such immortal hits as "Dardanella," "Ain't We Got Fun," "The Japanese Sandman," "Hooray For Hollywood," and "Too Marvelous For Words."
This original 1916 "Big Notes" Columbia A2007 is in V++ - nah, call it E- condition. Just a little wear, a few scuffs.
