It's easy to get lost in the dense layers of synth Drab Majesty weave together on Modern Mirror. Like their other efforts, the 2019 record feels nostalgic for a time when Casio pop was at its most innovative and genuinely felt fresh and groundbreaking, but this is no pastiche or tribute record. Somehow, the group manage to show us that there's still life - and new ideas - left in a scene that for many peaked in the early-1980s. Clearly informed by groups like ABC, Ah-Ha, Pet Shop Boys, Tears for Fears and definitely one for the list if you're a fan of contemporaries such as Nation of Language or epoch-spanning and defining titans like New Order, while you can never quite put your finger on what makes one group authentic and another not, the standout factor here might be the cross-pollination of ideas from shoegazier realms. Either way, it's heavy and seems to envelop you completely.
