DURAN DURAN
Duran Duran's eponymous debut artfully coalesced the sonic and stylistic elements of the burgeoning new romantic movement they were soon to spearhead: pumping synths, glossy production, and seemingly impossible haircuts. Ultra-smart singles like "Girls on Film" and "Planet Earth" became instant smash hits both in the U.K. and America, and other fine pop gems such as "Anyone Out There" and "Careless Memories" rounded out the album's stellar first side. Side two was a far more experimental and revealing affair, with primary songwriter Nick Rhodes leading the band through atmospheric mood-pieces like "Night Boat," "Sound of Thunder," and the instrumental "Tel Aviv," all of which are particularly reminiscent of mid-era Roxy Music (clearly one of Duran's biggest influences). Limited Edition double album version includes remixes of the hit singles.
RIO
Produced by Colin Thurston (of David Bowie fame), 1982 magnum opus Rio is the group’s second album and is as representative of the 1980's as it gets, at its absolute best. The release exhibits a harder, more dance-worthy sound than its predecessor, built around the band's unforgettable melodies and Simon Le Bon's creative lyrics. The perfect soundtrack for dance and romance, Rio is a fusion of style and substance that even three decades after its original release remains as listenable and danceable as ever. Through the sheer quality of its infectious synth-pop singles – "Rio," "Hungry Like The Wolf," and "Save A Prayer" and their accompanying videos which were heavily rotated on MTV – Rio saw the British group break into the U.S. once and for all, with the album spending a staggering 129 weeks on the Billboard 200 chart. Limited Edition double album version features the original U.K. album master of Rio with a bonus 12? featuring five remixes by David Kershenbaum for the original U.S. pressing.
