Rarity: Scarce: and harder to find in stereo. Rarely seen with a cover in such superb condition. The record appears lightly played, but does have a couple or three tiny marks that emit a few, brief, light clicks. Records of this vintage seldom escape entirely, but this beautiful debut Dusty album mostly plays superbly (or I would not offer it).

Brief Info: The debut album by one of the UK’s greatest ever female vocalists. Issued in the UK in 1964 after leaving The Springfields, this powerful, soulful album is a gem and includes some wonderful songs by quality writers of the day. Not really classified as a Northern Soul singer, but her music and style offers more than an insight within the genre, and fans of that style mostly love Dusty’s music. This national treasure can be enjoyed to a very high standard from this rarer stereo copy. Yes, it has a few light clicks here-and-there, but overall, relatively few, and some are masked anyway by the powerful loud sound. Be clear, most songs play superbly with little unwanted on a very cleanly pressed early Philips record. No distortion or groove wear, that legendary vocal stills sends a shiver down the spine. Along with a magnificent cover, this will delight many collectors, but with the odd brief reminder of what is being played, a vintage vinyl record, it will not quite be for the audiophile purists who only demand perfection at any cost. But given the perilous era and equipment around at the time, this has survived the time well overall.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): and arguably better. A single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the closed edges. This has the smooth matt paste-on panel on the back. Printed and made in England, uncredited. This a dedicated stereo prefix cover with the lesser-seen ‘THIS PHILIPS HI-FI-STEREO…’ text at the bottom of the back.

Lamination & Front: Intensely coloured with no light fading or the usual chipping that often ruins this classic 1960s cover. The laminate retains superb shine, freshness and clarity, only a little dulling near the top and bottom where the thick record presses in storage. No lifting at all and only a tiny few, super-fine hairline edge creases that hardly even register. It even retains its original 38/7 pre-decimal price sticker near the top right corner, this will easily remove on the laminated surface, but I think these actually add history and satisfaction on covers purchased in the old defunct currency. A gorgeous front cover and seldom seen better.

Cover Back: The back is equally impressive, this one with the paste-on panel style. Only gentle clues of age with slight darkening of the card, this mostly near the very edges that few ever avoid as the barest minimum. This apart, there is little else to really fault.

Top Edge: Unworn up to each corner end, that so rare to see on this very chip-prone cover. The dark blue surface fully intact, the laminate smooth and unpeeled, also straight.

Bottom Edge: The surface beneath the laminate is now white, also barely worn at all.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and very sharp with barely any wear or thickening. The card used is thicker than most from the era, so quite a robust and heavy cover. The record enters on this edge, it is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced.

Spine and Text: Little short of as-made and immaculate. Solid, straight, and I am certain, no compression. This style of cover did not have a the clear folded spines of standard sleeve. They were more rounded, and this not quite manufactured with the text on the end, hence its seen more via the back, that hardly unusual. All text is pristine perfect and unworn under the solid, uncracked or peeled laminate. This retains ultimate smoothness with no scuffs, also very white. Another bonus being the lack of bowing, this cover retains fantastic definition and flatness.

Corners: Four superb corners, again rarely seen as such. Hardly any rubbing with superb definition retained with no knocks or dinks.

Cover Summary: A very strong and impressive all-round example of this lovely 1960’s stereo cover, one that will prove immensely difficult to find better. Stereo prefix text covers are fare less abundant than the mono, this is a truly beautiful item that should please many, if not most collectors. Indeed, it could prove a substantial upgrade for many in its own right.

The Inner Sleeve: EXCELLENT(–): the polylined inner sleeve has aged more with corner creases (often deliberate to stop the record sliding out), and some moderate discolouration of the white paper. However, two crisp window circles, the lining still intact and clear. All edges unsplit with no repairs. This is date-coded 095 (September 1965), with ‘British & Other Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT: but actually looks way better, under light, a tiny few fine stylus marks are seen, mostly on track two. As stated, a few mainly light clicks, but brief and some lost in the sound. Be assured, most songs play superbly well with little unwanted, but not quite for audiophiles who demand only ‘perfection’, that so hard to achieve on records of great age and popularity. With both playing surfaces looking very impressive with any surface blemishes few and faint. Both retain excellent shine and quite heavily pressed on top-quality vinyl. With most of these types played to destruction or even trashed, this is a lightly played copy with only mild blemishes taken in context. Visually a lovely record that should please many collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rarer stereo pressing plays for most, even above it’s clean visual grading with to fault to the majority of the songs. I do realise what a bold statement this is, this too on a challenging record with an iconic voice and strong recording. All the ingredients for distortion and clipping, but none here. This has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds minimal and faint, overall an exceptional clean pressing with no tracking issues*. As stated, a few brief clicks – a tiny few on the first song, and start of the second, some are lost in the music. Not a lot to fault on side two overall. So yes, brief reminders its a vintage 1960s record being played, but little detracts from the sheer beauty of the voice and songs that retain superb clarity. Not for the perfectionists, but many collectors will cherish this beautiful Dusty debut, it still merits high recommendation if the blemishes are not an issue.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
