Label/Format: Philips – original intense black, matt finished with textured rough surfaces. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both in very attractive and still very fresh looking condition. Spindle marks are very few indeed and mainly, light and fine. Always very difficult to find popular mono records of this considerable age so lightly played and unabused.

Cat Number: BL 7594.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 155 grams. A very impressive weight for any standard record no matter when they were pressed.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: a very early pressed copy that looks and plays superbly. This has survived the Dansette era with a few surface marks and NO penetrating scratches. The important factor, this legendary woman’s voice still sounds as magnificent on this record as it did way back into the mid 60s.

Brief Info: The debut album by one of the UK’s greatest ever female vocalists. Issued in the UK in 1964 after leaving The Springfields, this powerful, soulful album is a gem and includes some wonderful songs by quality writers of the day. This national treasure can be heard to near maximum pleasure from this overall well preserved mono record, the format of the era. Very difficult to find a copy that plays this well, the wonderful vocals are often ruined by heavy tracking equipment of the day or was simply played to destruction. The label evidence suggests very few plays, side two has a few surface marks but they have no sound the important factor is the lack of wear to the grooves and sound. From beginning to end, all is focused, sharp, practically noise-free and devoid of pops or clicks or any real note. This too being played on a highly revealing system for which this record was never really designed. For fans of this wonderful lady, a very early example that can still be enjoyed on clinical stereo equipment.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(–): a single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the closed edges and ends on the back on three huge rear flipbacks. The previous example of this album I offered was a smooth-back with paste-on style cover. Printed and made in England.

Lamination & Front: The front is lovely and little to fault. A small tip-in by the previous owner on the top right corner tip is apparent, but only small. The laminate retains a lovely shine and clarity with a fine degree of freshness, and all is fully adhered with no lifting. The super artwork of the young Dusty is very impressive and the surface has very few marks and barely any noteworthy creases or dulling. This is a cover that does often chip, especially on the edges, but this has barely any at all and little, indeed if anything spoils this very impressive front.

Cover Back: The back has has aged a little with some moderate toning, mostly apparent near the left edge area. The centre of this edge has a small thumb burr with a couple of tiny, fine creases, almost the only ones (just) seen on this back. In terms of real wear, hardly any at all and few of these old white back will not darken over the years. As stated above, this is the flipbacked version which I have always found much harder to find. All three are in superb condition with barely any wear, no end grime-lines or burring and still shiny and quite white with the unpeeled and barely creased laminate protection.

Top Edge: Minimal traces of wear, but the right corner has been tipped-on.

Bottom Edge: As above with the final centimetre of so tipped on the very edge, this less apparent.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Little wear with only slight thickening, I have mentioned the very small thumb crease on the back centre. Tiny tip-in evidence only seen viewed end-on, this is barely apparent viewing from front and back. This fragile working edge is guaranteed untrimmed and is far neater than many I have seen from this era.

Spine and Text: A truly superb spine, little short of as-made: solid, straight with no compression. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked or peeled laminate.

Corners: The spine pair are lovely, any tip rubs or chips are tiny and both retain super shape. The right pair still retain fine shape but both have been, quite neatly tipped-in (not by me hasten to add very quickly), clearly the previous owner wanted their well into their forties covers to look as neat and attractive as possible (nothing wrong with that I suppose).

Cover Summary: An attractive all-round example of this lovely 1960’s mono cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. Yes, a few small blemishes, modest ageing and minor cosmetic enhancements, but given the sheer age of this lovely cover, I would think many, if not most collectors would find this more than acceptable.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: with barely any real wear, just modestly aged by reasonably light discolouration (darkening). A plain polylined inner that has two very neat window circles and clear lining, this has crinkled a little. All edges infact with no repairs and barely any creasing.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: NEAR EXCELLENT / VERY GOOD+: gradings that really do not do this vintage record justice. It does have some surface marks, mainly on side two, how many mono records this great age will not have some?, let’s be honest. When they have practically no effect on the sound and the record does look very modestly played, I have no issue with offering them. Still a fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. The evidence suggests a very few, possibly slightly careless plays, but the marks are superficial and the sound very impressive and that is what counts for me. Visually a still a very nice record that should please many collectors but clearly, not the perfectionists.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic mono record plays a full grade above it’s visual with very little to fault. I do realise what a bold statement this is, this on a challenging record with an iconic voice and strong recording. All the ingredients for distortion and clipping, but none here. This has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, faint and very infrequent, with barely any noticed at all, no significant pops or clicks were noted and overall, this has survived the swinging 60s well. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has never been played with a worn stylus – and that is the most significant fact. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Even the innermost songs track and sound sharp, here where the tracking angle is at it’s most critical, so many, even well looked after copies, can be let down here, not this one. And how many will offer no moderate or loud pops and clicks?, remember just one jolt or arm-drop on a Dansette, a vintage mono record player so popular at this time – and there’s another furrow or crater inflicted and another classic written-off. The marks present are simply brushed aside by modern, super-fine-tipped pick-ups that bypass all bar the deeper scratches, of which there are none present on this record. These old machines tracked with massive downforce – hence so many monos are worn out or severely scratched (and sometimes stereo ones too). Most of the marks on this record are near the beginning of side two, and nothing sounded at all, just pure quality vocal and backing in dynamic mono, few could as for more. This record could prove difficult to find significantly better and can still be highly recommended.

Now one of the most established sellers on Ebay and still offering the finest and most accurately described and graded records I can find. The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
