Label/Format: Philips – original intense black, matt finished with textured surfaces. Side two has the embossed O/TI tax codes which are totally unworn and retain all ink. (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both in very attractive and still very fresh looking condition. Under light there are moderate and some long spindle marks. But they are fine and in no way reflect the impressive condition of this lovely record that still offers superb mono sound with no distortion. Let’s be clear, if it didn’t, I would not offer it. Sound quality is paramount for this seller and mono records always offer the biggest challenge.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 160 grams. A huge and impressive weight for any record, this is way over average for this one and reitterating just how early this copy is.

Country of Manufacture: England.

Rarity: Scarce: a very early pressed copy that looks and plays superbly. Clearly played a number of times but I strongly suggest with the utmost care. This has more than survived the Dansette era with little more than a small few ultra fine surface marks and NO penetrating scratches. The important factor, this legendary woman’s voice still sounds as magnificengt on this record as it did way back into the mid 60s.

Brief Info: The debut album by one of the UK’s greatest ever female vocalists. Issued in the UK in 1964 after leaving The Springfields, this powerful, soulful album is a gem and includes some wonderful songs by quality writers of the day. This national treasure can be heard to absolute maximum pleasure from this stunningly preserved mono record, the format of the era. Very difficult to find like this, the wonderful vocals are often ruined by heavy tracking equipment of the day or was simply played to destruction. More unusual to find the popular albums that have clearly been played a number of times still offering top quality sound and this one really delivers. From beginning to end, all is focused, sharp, practically noise-free and devoid of pops or clicks. This too being played on a highly revealing system for which this record was never really designed. For fans of this wonderful lady, this must not be missed.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT(+): a single format with front laminate. This wraps around all the closed edges and ends under the paste-on style back. Printed and made in England.

Lamination & Front: Even with some mild dulling seen under light, this superb front retains a lovely high-gloss shine and clarity. All is fully adhered with barely any creasing at all. This is made with thick card and the artist’s picture will seldom be found much better, this really does defy it’s great age.

Cover Back: The back has hardly any real wear with any grubbiness or set-off being very light indeed. The paste-on style back is neat and uncreased with no ringwear and overall, it will be difficult to find much better. This style of back is almost the most prone to wear and ageing.

Top Edge: Practically unworn.

Bottom Edge: The odd tiny surface chip and possible slight compression.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and impressively sharp with little wear and no feathering or trimming. The odd tiny surface chip on the front only but the lack of burring and softening on such an old cover is impressive. Record enters on this edge.

Spine and Text: Little short of as-made: solid, straight with any compression mild. All text is perfect and unworn under the solid and uncracked or peeled laminate.

Corners: Small tip rubs on the bottom pair but little at all on the top. Very fine to near excellent shape is retained.

Cover Summary: A very strong all-round example of this lovely 1960’s mono cover, one that could prove very difficult to find much better. This beautiful item should please many, if not most collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD: the original inner is included. A plain polylined inner that has graded VG due to creasing and some mildish tone spots. Overall, still a fine shade of white with modest ageing in that respect. I prefer to keep the original inners with records rather than swapping, okay it’s creased, but at around 45 years old few will still look anything like new. Both the windows are crisp and sharp and the lining solid and very clear and all edges secure. It is British patented with ‘FOREIGN PATENTS PENDING’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT: or close too. Even with very fine surface marks seen under light, how many mono records this great age will not have some?, let’s be honest. A lovely visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and heavily pressed. The evidence of the spindle marks on the labels suggests a number of plays, well possibly so, but this is never definitive. What is more certain, it’s been played quite carefully and still offers lovely sound. Visually a super record that should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This classic mono record plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. I do realise what a bold statement this is, this too on a challenging record with an iconic voice and strong recording. All the ingredients for distortion and clipping, but none here. This has strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal, faint and very infrequent, with barely any noticed at all and no pops or clicks were noted and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Few copies will outperform this very early pressing I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played carefully and not subjected to a worn stylus. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record. Even the innermost songs track and sound sharp, here where the tracking angle is at it’s most critical, so many, even well looked after copies, can be let down here, not this one. And how many will offer no pops and clicks?, remember just one jolt or arm-drop on a Dansette, a vintage mono record player so popular at this time – and there’s another furrow or crater inflicted and another classic written-off. These machines tracked with massive downforce – hence so many monos are worn out or severely scratched (and sometimes stereo ones too). This record will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. All records are posted in professional boxes (NOT Mailers, these do not offer any real protection). The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. The boxes are then reinforced with at least TWO, ULTRA THICK stiffeners for maximum extra protection – these are FOUR TIMES thicker than commercial stiffeners and are custom-made for oneadayrecords. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
