Sometimes memories distort or inflate the quality of recordings deemed legendary, but in the case of Dusty in Memphis, the years have only strengthened its reputation.
The idea of taking England's reigning female soul queen to the home of the music she had mastered was an inspired one.
The Jerry Wexler/Tom Dowd/Arif Mardin production and engineering team picked mostly perfect songs, and those that weren't so great were salvaged by Springfield's marvellous delivery and technique.
This set has definitive numbers in "So Much Love," "Son of a Preacher Man," "Breakfast in Bed," "Just One Smile," "I Don't Want to Hear About It Anymore," and "Just a Little Lovin'" and ranks as one of the finest British albums of the 60s
Side A:
"Just a Little Lovin'" (Barry Mann, Cynthia Weil) – 2:18
"So Much Love" (Gerry Goffin, Carole King) – 3:31
"Son of a Preacher Man" (John Hurley, Ronnie Wilkins) – 2:29
"I Don't Want to Hear It Anymore" (Randy Newman) – 3:11
"Don't Forget About Me" (Goffin, King) – 2:52
"Breakfast in Bed" (Eddie Hinton, Donnie Fritts) – 2:57
Side B:
"Just One Smile" (Randy Newman) – 2:42
"The Windmills of Your Mind" (Alan Bergman, Marilyn Bergman, Michel Legrand) – 3:51
"In the Land of Make Believe" (Burt Bacharach, Hal David) – 2:32
"No Easy Way Down" (Goffin, King) – 3:11
"I Can't Make It Alone" (Goffin, King) – 3:57
LABELS: The labels are clean, bright and unmarked with just a few light spindle traces - NEAR MINT
VINYL Visual: Both surfaces retain their original deep, glossy sheen with a beautiful lustre. There are some light hairlines (visible under a bright light) but these have little audio consequence - the playback is superb - EXCELLENT
VINYL Audio: Sensational audio delivery with a clean, crystal clear, warm, rich and detailed sound and on playback at a loud volume there are no major audio issues of note - the whole LP plays to a very high standard with superb clarity, no discernible groove-wear, no distortion, sounds wonderful and is strictly graded EXCELLENT+ for audio - fantastic LP - very, very highly recommended indeed
SLEEVE: The original fully laminated sleeve is clean and bright. All edges are crisp and sharp with no wear to speak of - all spine text is clear and bold. There is some old tape residue in the top corner (please see close-up photos) where the original owner probably fixed a library number, but this is long gone and has just left a slight faded mark which doesn't detract from the overall beautiful appearance of the sleeve - critically graded a strong EXCELLENT
