Description
A chance to own the ultra rare BowPromo LP - Green Label Gem Recordings. UK only Promo- five songs that were meant to be on Hunky Dory but with different mixes plus two songs that never made it into the album. In 1970 Tony Defries made only 500 of these to send to record labels to secure Bowie and his other client Dana Gillespie a record deal. Tracks were original demos of the songs that appeared on Hunky Dory a year later- This is the ORIGINAL Promo, NOT the RSD version. Matrix Number BOWPROMO 1A-1/1B-1 which safely identifies it.
Brief Notes on tracks-
Oh You Pretty Things;
Bowie’s vocal is more upfront that the original. Large use of reverb on main and backing vocals on the chorus- noticeably so.
Eight Line Poem;
Echo sound affects are not on this version. Bowie has a different vocal take on this track.
Kooks;
The album Stereo mix fades two seconds before the BOWPROMO version does. Also constant use of acoustic guitar on the BP1 verses which was faded on the final mix.
It Ain’t Easy;
Song not on Hunky Dory and was most likely written before Life on Mars or Changes. Very similar mix for this song was recorded for his eventual home: Ziggy Stardust.
Queen Bitch;
Has Bowie ‘Mmm’ing at the end which was edited out on the final album. Ronson’s guitar has reverb compared to the vocals which have none.
Quicksand;
Track is fully in stereo- at the start of Hunky Dory, it’s in Mono.
Bombers;
Ended up on 1990 Rykodisc version but this version on BOWPROMO1 doesn’t skip like the later version. Extra drum beats on the Promo that don’t sound intentional. Acoustic guitar and a Bowie laugh at the end which also didn’t make the cut on the Rykodisc.

Andy Warhol- different shorter version than what appeared on ‘Weren’t Born A Man’.

Copy is in great condition and has very few minor marks on the vinyl.
Last one was auctioned over 3 years ago. LP is in VG + condition having been put away in a storage unit for twenty years. Copy was owned by a former RCA A+R man who helped signed Bowie in 1971. Never been up for sale before. Last one sold over two years ago. It is housed in an original brown sleeve so was one of the first to be given out as later copies had a white sleeve with a press kit .
