The rare third Chalmers album is the kind of thing collectors dream of, with a pressing of 100 copies, none actually sold commercially. It was produced only for demonstration purposes and as such actual album covers were never pressed. The music within shows Chalmers in a mellow, introspective mood. It’s similar to side two of PRIMEVAL ROAD; there’s not a heavy song here. On first listen, you might keep waiting for a hot guitar solo to come and be disappointed that they just aren’t there (the last song, especially, seems designed to end in a flourish of lead guitar, but does not.) But after a few more listens the quality and mood of the album will make you forget about that, because this is another triumph for Chalmers, a deep, melodic album that showcases tasteful guitar playing, sharp songwriting, mysterious lyrics, and excellent singing. It’s not exactly psychedelic, but has a bit of the same feel as 70s psych artists like Garrett Lund. It’s not exactly folky, but has lots of acoustic guitars and occasionally a kind of down home feel. String synthesizers have a mellotron-like effect, which may make this album of interest to prog fans too. It doesn’t easily fall into any genre, which is a sign of its distinctive style. A reissue of this rarity would be more than welcome. [AM]
