The Deadly Ones!-LP
Vee Jay VJ 1090-mono
1964 33 1/3 RPM LP release by 'The Deadly Ones', who were in fact a studio group organized by Joe South ("Games People Play"). LP at hand is truly a rarity-this is the first copy we have seen in 35 years in the business. The identities of the players do not seem to be known, which is a shame because there is some smokin' Surf/Instro playing on this LP. How shall we describe this record? Issued on the Vee Jay at the same time that the label also had the first Beatles album, this record combines two then-popular genres, Surf and Monster/Horror Rock. (A few fans have dubbed this "Horror Surf".) This was not the only such release in this genre-we are currently auctioning a similar LP by The Ghouls entitled "Dracula's Deuce" on Capitol Records. Basic lineup on the record is a smokin' 4 piece band with 2 guitars, electric bass & drums, although the group is augmented by organ & sax on a few tracks. Playing is high-energy Surf and instrumental, with all sorts of crazy sound effects, voices, howls, screams and what-have-you overlaid throughout. Here's a sample of some of the lunacy:"there's a creature in the surfer's lagoon," "hey, got a match?," "Igor, quit tormenting the sharks and get back on your surfboard!" or "oh please!!! Make it stop!!". Many of the tracks are authored by Joe South himself, or by one J. Sullivan (if this was England we would suspect Big Jim Sullivan). There are a few well-known covers too, like "Raunchy" and "Rebel Rouser". All in all it must be said that this record is really a lot of fun!
Front cover slick looks great (with memorable cover photo of your typical monster family at the beach!)-nice and clean with only slight wear. Small dent at top left corner, and wear to the 2 bottom corners. Small stain on the back over a few of the song titles. (Back cover has another great photo from the same photo session as the front cover slick.) Overall grade is Excellent Plus.
Disc (heavy vinyl-possibly 180 grams-black label/silver print with colorband and brackets around VJ logo) shows nice gloss indicating little groove wear. Vinyl surface shows numerous light to moderate marks and spindling, but nothing serious. As is often the case with these old 'deep groove' records, our play-testing revealed that it plays like a champ with only minor crackles & pops that are well behind the music and not even audible much of the time. A good-sounding disc, to be sure!
