Description
An original and genuine 1st mono press of SODP on the UK Parlophone label from 1968. Matrix 1/1. ****PLEASE NOTE --->>> THIS IS A MONO PRESS IN A STEREO 1st Issue Cover****. But please be aware the Stereo cover is absolute genuine 1st issue with flipbacks and original to the release date [even if it is a technical mismatch].. Also looking at the rear of the cover there is precious little difference anyway to be honest. Weirdly, both versions seem to mention 'stereo' in small letters in the top right corner, and the mono - doesn't mention 'mono' which is odd, but I guess, a sign of the times. So, you could understand how some of these copies could quite easily have been mismatched during the packing process. THE only major difference is down on the bottom right corner. Where the mono version has a bespoke text for the mono user, and the stereo copy version is bespoke for stereo. The vinyl is absolute true 1st press. "Gramophone" perimeter text and includes the 'Sold In The UK' statement. And if that weren't enough to get you interested what about the stamper numbers [1G/1R]? Most likely placing this copy within the first 2,000 copies ever pressed. So, you're not going to be going any earlier than that! We also have the original 1968 sepia toned Emi advertising inner sleeve. So, 100% genuine and 100% complete.
Vinyl (Ex/Ex-) In super condition and has only seen relatively light use. Under close inspection there are a few very slight light marks per side, and one tiny mark which does just sound in the opening 30 seconds [see detail below - this is not as big an issue as it might at first seem>>]. A thorough testing from beginning to end reveals a mostly EXCELLENT level of playback with two deviations. Ok, so by and large this is a stupendously well preserved extremely early copy - and you can really hear it in the audio. The audio delivered is delightful - to say the least. Intros and inbetweens are nice and quiet and the audio comes across with excellent clarity. It's a pretty clean player by and large. Just a touch of light background briefly in a couple of spots per side [E.g. Help ] - absolutely no big deal at all. The only deviations are..1) In that very quiet 30 secs of track 1 on side 1. Anyone familiar with this title will know that "ATA" starts with a very low-level one note vibrato by Lord on the organ. Over this continual one note, for the 1st 30 seconds, you will get a tick/click per revolution. Then, just as Lord increases the volume and goes up through the notes, this entirely drops out of the audio immediately and it goes clean. This is where the song starts for real - so ,thankfully, that aberration is only noticeable before the song starts for real. The only other sight deviation was 6-7 minor ticks in the low-key section as HELP closes out. Other than that expect a very high standard of playback which will thoroughly impress.
Cover (Ex) A truly beautiful specimen and I'm sure that many original examples do not look this well preserved. The colours on the front are all vibrant and deep [apologies for the pun].There's no sign of fading and the front lies totally flat. All I can make out are a couple of thumbnail creases toward the opening. The rear is extremely impressive. It's not often that you see a rear like this which has escaped the ageing process, along with wear or scribbles. All flipbacks are perfectly intact and secure. The spine is 100% intact. Overall the cover retains excellent rigidity. A very fine example for sure.
Inner (Vg+) No splits. But a bit aged in places.
