This is original Buffalo Springfield member Dewey Martin in 1964-66 before joining The Springfield, leading top Northwest garage/frat group SIR RALEIGH and THE COUPONS in a new formation featuring most of the members of THE SONS OF ADAM.
.
These Pre-Springfield nuggets from 1964-66 remained basically lost until the top Northwest JERDEN RECORDS spin-off label First American Record Co. issued the A and B sides along with some unissued material on their small PiccAdilly subsidiary in 1980. PiccAdilly was in operation only from the mid 70's through 1982 mostly releasing Jerden back material (primarilly in country, jazz and big-band). This LP was indeed an anomaly; though based on the success of the Buffalo Springfield and continued interest in the individual members' music, entirely warranted and welcome.
.
Originally from Ottawa (fellow Canadian to Buffalo Springfield bandmates Neil Young and Bruce Palmer) Dewey Martin moved to the USA in his teens, playing in Nashville as a touring drummer with Faron Young, Roy Orbison, the Everly Brothers, Patsy Cline and others.
.
In 1964, Martin landed in Seattle, where he played drums with top Northwest beat group Sir Raleigh and the Coupons, best known for the first charting single of "Tomorrows Going To Be Another Day", and who's British Invasion-styled cover of "White Cliffs of Dover" was a highly successful single in Los Angeles. Martin moved down there and recruited a new Sir Raleigh and the Coupons line-up from members of burgeoning psych/garage rockers, The Sons of Adam. The group released four singles (including a brilliant B-Side version of THE BEATLES' "Things We Said Today") - for A&M, Jerden and Tower- by early 1966; with Dewey Martin singing lead (XLNT VOCALS AS IT TURNS OUT -LISTEN TO THE SOUND CLIPS BELOW!) on all of the tracks...
All of those songs, plus a few unissued, are on this LP.
.
Listen to the surprisingly close Springfield feel that runs through "It Took A Long Time"
-a taste of the great things to come.
.
...Martin soon left to join the Modern Folk Quartet, briefly, and the Dillards. He was mainly looking to play country-rock, however, and in the spring of 1966, was invited to join a group calling themselves The Herd.
.
They were soon to become better known as Buffalo Springfield.
The rest you already know.
