Description
ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome LP – a still-sealed copy – from Novalis (150007-1, Swiss pressing, DDD stereo) features Dmitry Sitkovetsky leading the English Chamber Orchestra from the violin in highly spirited and supremely eloquent renditions of Mozart’s Violin Concertos No. 4 in D Major K. 218 and No. 5 in A Major K. 219 “Turkish”, both recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, in May 1985 (producer: Dr. Wilfried Doenicke / engineer: Heinz Wildhagen).
Wrote the critic S.J. in his review for the November 1987 issue of The Gramophone:
“Dmitry Sitkovetsky is very much a rising star amongst younger violinists, and it's encouraging that a relative newcomer who avoids virtuoso flashiness and expressive sensationalism can attract such widespread acclaim. These are serious, musicianly performances, stylish and communicative, and completely lacking in that rather hollow reverential quality that Mozart often seems to draw from younger players. Technically the playing cannot be faulted—a suspicion of hardness in the opening solo of K218 probably has more to do with the way the microphone catches the violin tone than with Sitkovetsky's playing—and it's always a relief to me to hear vibrato used imaginatively: as a tonal constant it can be pretty irritating.”
Incidentally, the memorable cover photo of Sitkovetsky was taken by Stephan Cropp, Kronberg. There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket – printed in German, English, and French – by Karl Schumann.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the still-sealed jacket is near-MINT. Though there is some minuscule bumping at corners, really, there are no flaws to speak of and the jacket appears virtually as new – overall, this rates as a lovely collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is MINT. This is a still-sealed, unplayed, pristine copy – the ideal collector's copy.
