Description

Donald Fagen - The Nightfly One of my favorite albums. Purchased at Rose Records in Downtown Chicago as they were closing. Pampered on a Thorens turntable with an Audio Technica Cygnet cartridge. This is Donald Fagen's 1st solo album after Steely Dan disbanded in 1981. It's an autobiographical take on the optimism of his suburban childhood in the 50's & 60's. The Nightfly was one of the first fully digitally recorded jazz-pop albums. The engineers took classes at 3M in St Paul MN to learn to operate the new equipment effectively. Due to the countless hurdles of learning digital recording hardware and recording techniques, the album took eight months to record. The album cover features Donald as a disc jockey, wearing a collared shirt and tie, speaking into a RCA 77DX microphone. In front of him is a turntable (16 inch '50s model, with a Para-Flux A-16 tonearm), an ashtray, a matchbook, and a pack of Chesterfield Kings. 
By the turntable is the cover of the 1958 jazz album: Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders (one of Don's favorite albums).
On the wall is a large clock at 4:09. An advertisement in Billboard shortly before the album's release described the album cover: "At 4:09 a.m., silence and darkness have taken hold of the city. The only sound is the voice of The Nightfly"
The cover was shot in Fagen's apartment in the Upper East Side of Manhattan by photographer James Hamilton.
The Nightfly received widespread acclaim and received seven nominations at the 1983 Grammy Awards.  It was certified platinum in both the US and UK, and generated two popular singles with the top 40 hit "I.G.Y." and the MTV favorite "New Frontier".
