ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome LP from Mercury (SR90156, US pressing, maroon/silver label FR-2/FR-4 stampers, colorback jacket, stereo) features Antal Dorati’s thrilling album of Verdi Overtures and Preludes – recorded 9 July 1957 at London’s Watford Town Hall – with the London Symphony Orchestra on dazzling, effervescent form – one of the great Verdi albums from the “golden age of stereo.”
Included are: the Overtures to La Forza del Destino, Nabucco, and I Vespri Siciliani, as well as the Preludes to Acts I and III of La Traviata. Dorati was a potent opera conductor and he brings to these marvelous scores a keen sense of theater in bold, dramatic lines.
The late 1950s marked the beginning of a sort of renaissance at the London Symphony Orchestra, a band on the cusp of a ‘Golden Age,’ their high-octane brilliance on remarkable display in this glorious tour of Verdi’s operas. Needless to say, the sound throughout is uniformly outstanding, beautifully balanced with a lovely bloom to the orchestra, produced and engineered by Wilma Cozart and C.R. Fine, respectively.
Incidentally, there are superb liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is minor edgewear, more so along the open edge of the jacket, which also shows some discoloration. In addition, there is a minor nick to the top edge and mild discoloration/shelfwear to the rear panel. However, there are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the jacket remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as an excellent collector’s copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is quite superb. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
