From the collection of a noted Australian rock’n’roll and entertainment historian comes this great piece of Australian – New Zealand rock history Dragon. Scented Gardens For The Blind LP. NZ Pressing. 1974. Vertigo. 6360903. Copyright 1974 but released February 1975. Second album for the New Zealand group before they came to Australia in May 1975, changed their musical style and entered music history. Like their first album, this didn’t make an impression on the charts, despite Dragon being one of NZ’s most popular live acts. Perhaps it had something to do with the album’s weighty prog rock influences; certainly the sensuous sunshine pop they perfected once they hit Australian shores was not only a vast artistic improvement, it proved extremely popular. Having said that, there are some indicators of the future, especially Grey Lynn Candy, the first track on the second side.
NOTE: REVISED CONDITION DESCRIPTION: The LP is in Very Good (not Very Good +) condition. Numerous light scratches and hairlines, some popping on quieter passages, plus noticeable crackles and pops at the beginning of both sides of the LP but soon settles down. There is a noticeable scratch on the opening of Track One on Side One, and the end of Track Three, plus Track One of Side Two but all play through fine with almost no audible reminders. Cover, however, not that great – at best, it’d be Good, with centre splits on the side and bottom edge, laminate loss at the corners, and generally a bit grubby. Insert is in Very Good condition. Of course, this LP is rarer than a quiet night at home so it’s just a matter of how badly you want it and what you’re comfortable paying. Scented Gardens, for all its failings, is certainly worthy of any serious collection.
