Duke Ellington INDIGOS - Columbia 2-eye Red CS-8053 (absolutely superb!)

Simply put, this Columbia CS 8053 should be on every music lover's list, to say nothing of audiophile lists, as one of the best records ever produced. For pure lush sound and, quite frankly, some of the best music you will ever audition--- start to finish---it is a gem.

Let me put that another way, if I might: This is NOT just a big band record. Fact is, it is one of the most beautiful jazz discs ever recorded.

Just listen to Ozzie Bailey sing AUTUMN LEAVES for a start. The color here, the rich presence, its "in the room" nature, can leave you with the hairs on your arms standing. And, I must say, to this day, not one diva---and there have been many---has ever been able to dislodge this version as the absolute standard.

Or, amid everything else on this album, trust me, you will not miss Clark Terry on trumpet. Or Ray Nance's violin. Or the absolutely legendary Johnny Hodges on sax. It simply is not possible.

Then, of course, the selections come from a most certain heaven: SOLITUDE, WHERE OR WHEN, MOOD INDIGO, THE SKY FELL DOWN, PRELUDE TO A KISS, WILLOW WEEP FOR ME, and DANCING IN THE DARK, among others. Each and every one is simply inspired. Nobody touches these standards to this day. And, frankly, I don't think anyone ever will.

Please note: I have watched rough-house audiophiles, usually heavy-handed in their manner, approach a turntable to lift this disc from the mat as if it were the grail, rare and precious.

A remarkable, romantic masterwork, with beautiful sonics to match. This copy's cover is very smart and handsome, with no major wear whatever. Inside, the 2-eye red will play NM- to VG+, with only light scuffing in evidence amid its original shine.
