* The Leme Palace Hotel is still open, known now as Windsor Leme Hotel. It stands at the north end of Copacabana Beach, Rio de Janeiro.

^ Jornal O Globo, aka O Globo is still a daily newspaper, based in Rio de Janeiro. O Globo is the most prominent print publication in the Grupo Globo e Infoglobo media conglomerate.

Founded in 1925 by journalist Irineu Marinho.

Average circulation in 2015: 320,000 issues.

Grupo Globo entered radio in the 1940s (Rádio Globo), and TV in the 1960s (Rede Globo).

Songs are in Brazilian Portuguese.

About the concert: The Copa Trio opened the conecrt, then remained on stage as the accompaniment for the great music stars’ performances. Tamba Trio was the final act of the concert.

Rare recording: This was the first of only two recordings of the legendary Copa Trio. Their second recording was also live, an LP titled Tristeza, recorded as “Dom Salvador Trio” at the Mocambo restaurant in Rio. Back then the Copa Trio gigged often at the legendary Beco das Garrafas nightclub in Rio. Beco was where Antonio Carlos Jobim (Tom Jobim) and others launched bossa nova in the late 50s and early 60s. Shuttered for several years, Beco reopened in 2004, and is an excellent place to hear live classic bossa nova music.

Copa Trio: Dom Salvador (piano), Sergio Barroso (bass), and Edison Machado (drums).

Please note: The rhythm section for Copa Trio may have been different than stated above. Caetano Rodrigues wrote in his book that the drummer was Dom Um Romão, and Manuel Gusmão on bass. He added that Gusmão was the founder of Copa Trio. This was also mentioned by Arnaldo de Souteiro in the liner notes of the vinyl album A Trip To Brazil Vol. 3: Back To Bossa (Universal 0697101 , 2002).

The Copa Trio was the house trio at the Leme Palace Hotel for many years.

I read that in 1965 there was a 2nd pressing of this LP, same title but with the added wording on front cover “com Varios Artistas”. The 1964 pressing was a much more limited edition, exclusively sold at select venues and record shops, to continue fundraising for the CACE foundation.

This album was originally purchased

in a record shop in São Paulo, Brasil.

The performances & recording were part of a fundraiser for C.A.C.E. (Companha: “Ajude Uma Criança a Estudar”), organized, and under the direction of Sra. Stella Marinho, aka Stella Goulart Marinho.

Album cover condition:

In good condition, especially for being 55 years old.

Light surface wear, minor scuffs. Very light ring wear.

The spine is good, one small seam split.

The top and bottom seams are split. It may have never been glued, perhaps enclosed in clear plastic outer sleeve?

No ink pen writing. This has minor corner dings.

The front cover has one small stain in upper right corner, where a record shop sticker had been.

The cover has minor discoloring around edges.

This is from a non-smoking home.

The record disc is in very good-plus condition.

Side 1 has a few very light scratches,

and scuffs.

Side 2 has a few scratches, see close-up photo.

Plays well, clear sounding, no skips on either side.

The labels are very good,

the center hole is very clean.
