Label/Format: Blue Horizon – matt finish with textured surfaces from the large first ring ridge to the centre. The outer areas are smooth (Please see my label scans).

Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and attractive with any spindle traces tiny, hardly any and faint. As can be seen on my scan, the first side label has a couple of smallish white spots, without any doubt, this is a small manufacture blemish which happens sometimes.

Cat Number: 7-63202.

Mode / Speed: Mono / 33.3 rpm.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Weight of this Record: 115 grams. Below average for the era, but CBS records were not a company that often pressed heavyweight records.

Brief Info: Boyd was an American pianist and vocalist, this his only album on the prized and highly collectable blues label Blue Horizon. A very fine bluesman in his own right, but here given extra pizzazz with the inclusion of full backing by the classic-era Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. The music distinctive and unmistakable and an essential album for early Fleetwood Mac collectors. This an excellent set in mono, the record appears little played and offers mostly very clean sound. Not one seen often and I am sure many Fleetwood Mac fans are unaware they appear on this impressive Eddie Boyd album.

Cover Grade and Format: EXCELLENT: a single format with front laminate, this only covers the top and bottom folds and not the spine. The back is matt and unprotected, clearly highly prone to wear. Printed and made in England by Ernest J. Day and has the ‘Patents Pending’ text.

Lamination & Front: The laminate retains excellent shine, fresh and clarity with hardly any lifting – a fine sliver on the bottom edge towards the right. Minimal creasing with any dulling the same, even viewed under light. The left and right edges have laminate ends with a narrow unprotected strip each side, both of which have hardly any wear at all.

Cover Back: The matt vulnerable black back show little wear at all, any rim rubbing tiny and ultra faint with hardly any creasing or general rubbing. Tiny and very minor burr traces to the odd edge area, but little else.

Top Edge: Mainly straight with little wear at all.

Bottom Edge: Little wear again but less straight with a couple of waves, more apparent when viewed end-on.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean, reasonably sharp with little wear. A little thickened with a wave seen viewed end-on. Record enters on this edge that is guaranteed untrimmed or enhanced in any way.

Spine and Text: Solid, mainly quite straight with a little ‘curl’ on the bottom corner area. Very little compression with only a little patchy mild rubbing. So most of the text is present with just the odd character clip. These unprotected early CBS spines are highly vulnerable and few offer most of the text content still intact. In fact I have seen many similar ones totally threadbare, I consider this one strong overall.

Corners: Some mainly light tip rubbing with fine shape retained.

Cover Summary: A strong all-round example of this obviously wear-prone 1960 cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. A little edge wear and a couple of waves, but this elusive Blue Horizon cover should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: VERY GOOD(++): a little darkned with age, the main reason for the cautious grade. A heavy-duty polylined plain white inner with two perfect window circles and very clear lining. All edges unsplit with no repairs and any creasing light. This is UK patented with ‘Foreign Patents Pending’ text.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+): a very fine visual copy that is very clean, shiny, intense black and quite solidly pressed. A copy with minimal plays on all the evidence with any surface trace marks few, very light and faint as seen more critically under bright angled light. Viewed normally in room light, this looks fantastic and the surface blemishes are as faint and minor as they almost get on a vintage mono record, this has no penetrating scratches at all. Visually a super record that should please many, if not most collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This quality blues album plays even above it’s high visual grading with very little to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. Any surface sounds are minimal indeed and this is an exceptional clean pressing. Most collectors will know what these vintage monos will be like these days – heavily marked, grubby with sound to match – this very much on the other end of the spectrum, this appears hardly used. Few copies will outperform this early pressing significantly I feel sure. Both channels are clean and sharp, I am certain this record has been played very lightly and appears carefully handled with no damages or wear inflicted by heavy tracking or worn thick mono stylus. Nothing of any real note spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record – being a big Fleetwood Mac fan (or all eras), this was a very enjoyable album with that trademark early Peter Green blues sound. This copy will prove very difficult to find significantly better and can be strongly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
