Rarity: Issued right near the end of the pre-EMI era, this is a fairly rare album without the small logo on the labels. Most offered are second pressings with the EMI logo. It proved to be the final new album issued prior to the EMI box being included on the labels, the repress and new label format came along only very shortly afterwards making the originals more elusive.

Brief Artist & Album Info: This self-titled album for Harvest was their third, a band that always gave an audience at great time at the festivals between 1970-73 - they almost became a staple diet at these events. Their Harvest albums were always interestingly packaged and this is no different. Known as the ‘slaughterhouse’ or ‘Meat Cover’ cover, this is pretty high on bad taste. Check out closely, amongst the hanging meat on hooks is a man trussed up in the middle, this has to be the most controversial of the Hipgnosis designed covers. The actual design on the front and back is lovely, it’s lightly textured in what is made to look like a leather-like finish, this is still quite pronounced when viewed closely. Musically slightly more refined than some of their albums and for me, one of their very best. This is a fine all-round copy, the cover especially is incredibly difficult to find in top condition and this has withstood the test of time well overall and the record plays superbly with practically nothing unwanted. The set is complete with the Harvest promotional inner and a ‘WEEMEENIT’ Harvest sheet.

Cover Grade and Format: EX(-), an unlaminated gatefold format with matt finish. The outer faces are beautifully textured with a leather-like appearance, inside is smooth. Design by Hipgnosis and printed and made by Garrod & Lofthouse Ltd. ‘File under POPULAR : Pop Groups’ printed on top, back right hand corner.

Cover Front: Beautifully made with superb complex texturing, the artwork not the most tasteful but a famous rock cover nonetheless. Being honest, I think I have harshly graded this one, being highly prone to all forms of wear, the earliest examples are notoriously difficult to find looking attractive. This front has only modest traces of rubbing, most all near the top and bottom edges against the inside flipback. This rarely, if ever escapes this at the very least, here only very light. Under light, a faint trace of a sticker residue mark near the top edge but no tear. The artwork retains rich deep colour with any light creasing confined to the edges, the bottom right corner has a mild single ripple (or wave). Hardly any marks with a fine freshness retained, with all considered, this front is really nice and will prove difficult to find better (with a first issue record inside).

Cover Back: Very similar again in all respects, even better if anything – any record impression rubs are very light and faint indeed and there is no sticker mark or wave. The lack of deep penetrating ringwear is a bonus as this cover suffers from this on a regular basis, I really do consider this back exceptional.

Cover Gatefold Inner: Very mild surface rub and light handling traces on the blacker left side. Very little to fault really and again both are in very fine condition.

Top Edges: Light, patchy rubbing, all quite modest really.

Bottom Edges: Mainly light and more consistent rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Clean and quite sharp with little traces of wear and no feathering or trimming. Record enters on the back edge, the front being closed.

Spine and Text: Nice to see this fragile spine so well intact and with so little wear. Solid, quite thick, straight with any compression modestly light. Folded squarely with both right edges meeting up perfectly together and parallel. Hardly any wear or rubbing at all and all the text is perfect and unworn. A couple of fine creases only.

Corners: All the corners have rubbed but retain fine to very fine shape. Again few will avoid some corner wear by nature of the card and format.

Cover Summary: A very attractive (if the artwork can ever be deemed ‘attractive’) all round example of this very delicate, scarce and even controversial, early 70’s cover, one that will prove difficult to find much better. Not the prettiest artwork ever put on to an album cover but certainly daring and different. Only marked down a little from excellent due to the edge rubs. With the main artwork faces and spine in strong condition this will please many collectors but not the most discerning.

The Harvest Inner Sleeve: The vintage Harvest promo inner is in very fine and attractive Excellent condition. It has lost it’s polylining but the owner replaced it with an ultra soft Japanese anti-static inner. The original polylining regularly came adrift on these inners as the glue lost it’s grip. This has aged only slightly with minor darkening and glue browning o the seams that all remain unsplit. Barely any creasing and this looks just right for it’s considerable age.

The Harvest Address Insert Sheet: This yellow sheet with it’s ‘WEEMEENIT’ reference was part of the Edgar Broughton Band information address. This is guaranteed original, not a repro. It has two creases, one large the full length of the sheet, the other a small corner one. Clean and no real damage or tears and only mild handling crinkle. Few copies will ever include this and a nice extra for the fan and collector. Grading minus the creases would be excellent.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: A very fine EX example with nothing more than ultra fine and faint surface marks/hairlines that are seen under light. Very clean with a very decent shine and quite heavily pressed. A copy certainly played a few times but it appears carefully, it should please many collectors.

Album Played For Grading: Yes. [I play ALL records I offer before submitting to Ebay, also the record is played in its entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or miniscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This rarer original format record plays even above its high visual grading with nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp, focused and clear, minimal surface sounds and no pops or clicks were noted. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this excellent record and this is one of the very best-pressed copies I have had for this sort-after record. Repressings can often disappoint and many originals are seen played to destruction. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended.

SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT neccessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
