Label Conditions: Both very clean, fresh and highly attractive with only a tiny few light, fine and faint spindle marks. A copy hardly played on visual and audio evidence, and this record is exceptional.

Warps: Assume all records I offer have no warping of any significance and all tracking is easy and effortless and should play on all turntables and even ‘budget’ decks.

Rarity: Scarce, complete first press formats with the insert are much harder to find. First mothers and early stampers and offering supreme sound, this record will prove hard to find much better.

Brief Info: The second album and is an acid-blues classic and carried on the raunchy Broughton sound that has distinct Captain Beefheart overtones. For me, this is their classic and the very peak of their creativity, the twisted ‘Psychopath’ being the highlight for me amongst some brilliant tracks. Always giving the audience a great time at the festivals between 1970-73 - they almost became a staple diet at these events. This copy totally complete with promotional inner and insert, a record hardly played and offering superb sound. A little cover wear but collectors who want top audio reproduction, this will delight.

Cover Grade and Format: NEAR EXCELLENT: a gatefold format with front and back laminate. The inside is matt and smooth. Printed and made in England by Garrod & Lofthouse and includes the original ‘Patents pending’ text. Both lyric insert and promotional Harvest inner are also included.

Lamination – Front & Back: Both sides retain shiny and clear laminate with a fine degree of freshness. There is no lifting and very little creasing – any present few, light and with minimal visibility and mostly fine edge types. Under angled light, a little very mild dulling is seen on the back around the rim shape but few will show less. A little rubbing to the corner tips but little else and this is a strongly attractive cover.

Cover Inner Gatefold: Impressive with little wear at all, any hint of any grubbiness near the top edges but little to fault and remaining attractive.

Top Edges: Minimal traces of any wear and both fully laminated and smooth.

Bottom Edges: Some light to moderate rubbing.

Right Edge(s), and Type: Solid, and mostly sharp with little wear. Any traces or thickening or burring very mild indeed as seen critically viewed end-on. These are guaranteed untrimmed and the record enters on the back edge.

Spine and Text: Solid, mainly straight with minimal compression. Folded square so the edges meet up closely together and parallel. A little chipping here and there with one or two small clips to the text but most-all is present and intact.

Corners: Light to moderate tip rubs with fine to very fine shape retained. Gentle rounding on the back right tips.

Cover Summary: A 42-year-old cover that has only gently aged, still a strong all-round example of this early 70’s cover, one that could prove difficult to find much better. A pleasing example should please many collectors.

The Inner Sleeve: NEAR EXCELLENT: Mildly aged with a little light creasing near one corner and record impression. A little darkening of the adhesive near the seams which all remain intact with no repairs. This retains it’s lining which can never be guaranteed.

The Lyric Insert: EXCELLENT(+): This is very clean with very sharp edges, just one very small and light corner crease. Printed both sides with small graphics and all song lyrics, this is guaranteed original and very nice indeed.

Vinyl Condition/Visual Grading: EXCELLENT(+). a very fine visual early copy that is clean, shiny, intense black and very solidly pressed. Viewed critically under angled light, a few ultra fine and faint surface marks, most even finer than hairlines and with NO sound of course. A copy that appears played very modestly and offering fantastic sound. Visually a splendid record that should please many, if not most collectors.

I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end via clinically revealing B&W speakers that include the legendary tweeter from their awesome Nautilus range that reveals every blemish or minuscule sound present on any record.]

Sound Quality and Audio Grading: This possibly lesser-lauded Harvest classic plays even above it’s high visual grading with practically nothing to fault. Strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear - sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. With any surface sounds barely registering and no pops or clicks noted and this is an very fine clean ‘first’ pressing. Nothing spoilt my pleasure when play-grading this wonderful record and the best place to start for those unfamiliar with this wonderful freak-beat band. This copy will prove difficult to find significantly better and can be highly recommended – audio quality is truly exceptional from beginning to end.

The record’s cover will be placed within a BRAND NEW soft protective sleeve and the actual record will be professionally cleaned on my new VPI-17 Pro vacuum system to give ultimate clean grooves and playing surfaces and the best possible looks and ultimate sound quality. You will NOT get tired, dull looking, dust infested records inside worn and foggy covers with tatty inners from this seller and that’s a promise and guarantee. The record(s) are REMOVED from their main cover to avoid edge splits and placed within a brand new polylined inner. The record’s original inner will be included if available. SOME GENERAL GUIDES TO WEAR AND CONDITIONS TO HELP YOU DECIDE

My Use of Description Terminology: Surface Marks = Superficial, usually light marks, hairlines or light scuffs that rarely sound. Scratch = a needle mark that goes below the record’s surface, some will sound, some will not, my play-grade will inform. Original = a record that has been pressed with the first label design which does NOT necessarily mean a very first pressed record. First Pressing = A record that I believe or know to be a genuine very first pressed record. I do not claim to always know for sure, and that’s why I state the stamper and matrix numbers if at all possible, for those who claim to know what they all mean, the information is there for the collector to decide. I prefer to use terms like ‘Early Copy’ rather than ‘First Pressing’ if I am not totally sure. Surface Sound = Mild, light sound, usually light crackle or similar. Distortion = Break up of the actual sound caused by groove wear or damage from a chipped stylus – the most undesirable form of unwanted sound, vintage mono records were the most prone to this happening but not exclusively so. The symptoms of distortion are high frequency clipping, moderate constant crackle or an echo type sound quality. Violin, piano and vocals are most prone to groove-wear distortion. Feathering = Fraying or softening of the entry edge of a cover. Covers with feathered entrance edges are more likely to have had the actual record inserted and removed more than a non-feathered, sharp-edged cover which are always far more attractive. Set Off, actually a printer’s term for dark ink leaving mild residue on pale or white ink when rested upon. e.g. when a gatefold cover has black ink closed against white, this can leave some black residue on the pale area – this is mostly unavoidable or course.

The Argument for Vinyl Original sound and mix (mono mixes are rarely available on CD), high quality sound on clean copies (played on a hi-end dedicated analogue system – breathtaking sound!), beautiful, large format covers, artwork, inserts and even full size posters etc; huge investment potential, and the pleasure of owning ‘the real thing’.
