In November 1921 a nine-piece group assembled in the Vocalion recording studio to wax two titles, The Sheik and Georgia Rose, which were issued as '"Played by The California Ramblers". The name was chosen in true fashion of the day, slightly exotic and definitely non-east coast, which seemed to indicate that their music was totally new and unconventional.
In the first few months of their existence the Ramblers' personnel varied somewhat but by April 1922 it included trumpeters Bill Moore and Frank Cush, trombonist Lloyd Olson, reedmen Freddy Cusick and, above all, Adrian Rollini who were to form the nucleus of the hand for several years to come.
The band cut several hundred recording sessions as the California Ramblers (and its smaller units The Little Ramblers, The Goofus Five, The Five Birmingham Babies, The Vagabonds and the Varsity Eight) were booked for long residencies clubs in Westchester and later in The Bronx.
Their Columbia recordings were rather jazz-oriented, allowing for plenty of improvised solos and for what may already be described as "swing". The group had quite a number of future greats go through their ranks, people like Jimmy & Tommy Dorsey, Miff Mole, Red Nichols, Phil Napolean and even a trombone player named Abe Lincoln (a familiar name.... but from where....?)
THIS SESSION finds them in August of 1929, right at the end of Edison Records. This ‘needle cut’ was the company’s attempt to sell records to people who didn’t own an Edison phonograph, but it was too little, too late. It used a standard lateral groove, not the ultra-fine Edison vertical groove. This is record #14045, and the last known record issued on Edison is #14077. Since the Ramblers’ next record they cut is in September ‘29 (#14072) you can see this is right at the end of the company’s record division. For those looking for what take this is, the Blues side is N-1053-B-2-2- / the Idol side is N-1054-B-1-2
