Produced by George Martin, this debut bares little resemblance to the Beatles. Perhaps The Left Banke is a better comparison because of the strings and fruity melodies..certainly this is a great slice of baroque pop, served up about as English as can be. As stereotypically English as tea and scones anyway - check out the Ray Davies style narrative on "Characters Number One", they just don't write pop music like this anymore. At least not with any great success or frequency. It sounds fresh, vibrant, somewhat naive, but incredibly well constructed.
