Description

EL CAMPO JADES:13th Song

(golden eagle records USA 1967)

RARE 60's Texas garage punk with

dreamy Farfisa organ  in the

Question Mark & Mysterians or

Sir Douglas Quintet vein...
The El Campo Jades  "13th Song" in

mono on Golden Eagle 101.

Absolutely pristine copy of 1967  LP

from 5 member band hailing from

El Campo,Texas (which is the reason

for their unusual name - maybe there

was another band called the Jades from the Houston area).

They cover a diverse selection of 60's garage and deep soul/Motown classics

and obscurities in their lean and somewhat raw sound. Their lead singer has a fine

voice for the soul and r&b numbers.

The album starts out with a slow, retro

do-wop song, Come Back Home, written by

Charley Romans, one of a few unknown or completely obscure tunes on the album (another is Muscle Bound Man).

Side 2 kicks off with a soulful cover of

the Wilson Pickett deep soul chestnut

"I Found a Love" .

Most of the other songs are uptempo,

some wild and raw !!!

The Jades are much more of a 60's garage band than a bar band (they don't have that

sound) despite the fact that they weren't

newcomers to the Houston music scene. According to the notes, they'd been playing in the Houston area since 1961. What's the difference between a bar band and garage band? Well, the way I see it, neither is a nationally known band, maybe not even regionally known. But a bar band has developed a style geared to bar patrons who not only are there to dance but to drink. The typical bar band will employ horns, maybe an electric piano or organ and play the big hits craved by the  thirty

something and fortysomething (and above)

crowd who are not really into the music as

much as hearing something familiar.

I can't think of a whole lot of bar bands that didn't play both Celebrate and Celebration in their show.

A garage band on the other hand, when they did play at live gigs, would often play for teens at clubs or parties where booze wasn't sold. If the music didn't have an edge, the band bombed because there were no artificial stimulants going through the minds of the audience to enhance the music. That said, what cemented my

opinion that the Jades were a garage band, not a bar band, is their raw, raucous cover

of "Little Latin Lupe Lu" - no horns, no

frills - just wild and woolly...
