Formed in Dorset and firmly eschewing polite rock circles, 2000 saw English doom metallurgists Electric Wizard added this heathen slice of goateed occultism to the stoner rock canon. Cut fast and abrasively at Chuckalumba Studios after a fraught period of arrests, injuries, and internal strain, it came swathed in controversy, and the recording techniques match the marginalism, largely in rehearsal-room jams and finished in a handful of takes. Narcotic tempos and lyrics steeped in occult pulp, informed by HP Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard. Vocalist and guitarist Jus Oborn handled all words and artwork, steering the record through disputes over sound and mix, scrumpling through black hole cuts 'Funeralopolis' and 'Vinum Sabbathi'.
