Description

"Disc for Baba Ram Dass" (Elektra BRD 1, early '70s?) LP. Note that "Disc for Baba Ram Dass" is not the real title -- there is none -- it's just the way the record is identified on the Elektra discography Website (http://www.atsf.co.uk/elektra/index.html).

The Website has this to say about this super rare LP: "Not an official release. About 200 copies were pressed up by Elektra, free of charge, for the followers of a guru named Baba Ram Dass, whom Jac Holzman admired. The disc does not have a proper sleeve, but was produced in a cardboard casing with a hole to show the label." The site seems to suggest that this was reissued in 2001, but I can find no trace of this -- perhaps they are confusing it with another Ram Dass release on Elektra.

The record has a couple of tracks of someone (probably Ram Dass -- a.k.a. Richard Alpert) lecturing; a couple of tracks of heavily reverbed intoning; several loose pseudo-Indian droning chants (with Indian instruments and guitars) that bring to mind hippie communes, not Indian music; one track of hippie chick singing and acoustic guitar strummery -- and, in general, a hippie cult/eastern psych vibe.

As noted above, the album never had a cover -- currently it is housed in a generic black sleeve. The disc is in VG++ condition; there are no major problems, but there is light surface crackling throughout -- though this was probably not a great pressing to begin with.

A unique record for collectors of Elektra and of artifacts of the hippie commune era.
