Another typically wonderful album by Ella Fitzgerald in her prime, this set augments the original LP (which finds Ella joined by pianist Lou Levy, guitarist Herb Ellis, bassist Joe Mondragon, and drummer Stan Levey) with three previously unreleased selections from the same era (with Levey, bassist Wilfred Middlebrooks, and drummer Gus Johnson). Ella is in fine form on such numbers as "A Night in Tunisia," an emotional "You're My Thrill," "Jersey Bounce," "Clap Hands! Here Comes Charlie," and an unissued "The One I Love (Belongs to Somebody Else)." Although not reaching the heights of her live performances, this is an excellent (and somewhat underrated) set.

Bernie Grundman proves that all those years at Contemporary Records mastering sessions for Lester Koenig has given him the sensitivity and knowledge to master a great jazz record. The Classic Records re-issue is easily cleaner, more extended and lifelike than my original Verve. The 180 gram RTI’s pressings were immaculate, with no surface noise or defects.

Consider this record another view of the truly original artist that Ella Fitzgerald was. This is a recording that any music lover should own.

Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(c)           Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!

(d)          The record is pressed on a beautiful, high-quality, virgin-grade vinyl, which is usually used for audiophile, extended-dynamic-range, half-speed mastered and connoisseur pressings.
