Wow, what you are bidding on is a beautiful, UK pressing of ELTON DEAN QUINTET: THE BOLOGNA TAPE. This is a pressing on the OGUN Records label. "We all know by now (because Elton keeps on saying it) that Ninesense is the spiritual heir of the 1969/70 Keith Tippett Group, but it's also rather more than that. As far as I am concerned, this band is the first that gets close to mirroring the totality of the London jazz scene in all its diversity, vitality and strength of character. The lp and jacket are in great condition (lp looks unplayed). If you need this record, this would be the one to get.

Elton Dean was a British free-jazz musician, who played alto saxophone as well as saxello, a rarely used type of electric saxophone. He was born in 1945 in Nottingham, and took piano and violin lessons as a child. At the age of 18, he took up saxophone and became involved in the English jazz scene. He played in John Baldry's Bluesology, a band that featured young Reginald Dwight as a pianist, who went on to borrow the first names of Dean and Baldry for his stage name, Elton John. In 1968 he became a member of Keith Tippett's band. Tippett's four piece horn section which was fronted by Dean, was added to Soft Machine's line up in Autumn 1969. While the seven-piece big band didn't last, Elton Dean nevertheless went on to make several classic albums with the Soft Machine, until he departed in 1972. He had also released a solo album Just Us with his own jazz quintet in 1971 that featured Australian drummer Phil Howard among others.
Since the departure from the Softs, Elton Dean went on to collaborate with many jazz and fusion musicians. He formed a large line up called Ninesense in 1975, featuring Keith Tippett, Hugh Hopper among others. In the 80s he joined Phil Miller's band called In Cahoots. In 1999 Dean formed the SoftWhere quartet with his old colleagues Hugh Hopper, John Marshall and Keith Tippett. Guitarist Allan Holdsworth replaced Tippett and the quartet was renamed as Soft Works. In 2004 they became called Soft Machine Legacy after guitarist John Etheridge filled in for Holdsworth.
As Dean was suffering from cirrhosis of the liver, he was hospitalized in late 2005. He died in February 2006 at Homerton Hospital in London. He was 60. Soft Machine Legacy will continue touring with saxophonist Theo Travis replacing the departed Dean.
