In the years leading up to the 2008 release of The Preface, Midwestern rapper Elzhi likely faced considerable frustration. From 1999 to 2002, he primarily collaborated as a session rapper without the opportunity to fully showcase his talents on a solo record. Joining Detroit's esteemed Slum Village in 2002 provided a breakthrough, though he faced the daunting task of following J Dilla's departure. Despite comparisons, Elzhi held his own until The Preface, an album he had seemingly been ready to deliver for nearly a decade. The Preface shined with its blend of soulful beats, predominantly crafted by the skilled producer Black Milk. His production, reminiscent of Detroit's musical legacy with a contemporary twist, provides a perfect backdrop for Elzhi's urgent flow and confident lyricism. Standouts like the murky funk of 'Fire Remix' and the dynamic percussion on 'Hands Up' underscore Black Milk's talent behind the boards. Elzhi's solid delivery and sharp lyricism throughout ensure The Preface stands as a notable debut, rivaling the best of 2008's hip-hop releases.
