EMERSON LAKE & PALMER: 1970 DEBUT UK ISLAND 1st PRESSING
BEAUTIFUL COPY - 2/3 PLAYS - STUNNING SOUND PERFORMANCE
EMERSON LAKE & PALMEREmerson Lake & Palmer
UK ISLAND (ILPS 9132) FIRST PRESSING (November 1970) OF EMERSON, LAKE & PALMERS'S DEBUT LP
ONE OF THE LAST ISLAND RELEASES WITH THE PINK LABEL - BY DECEMBER 1970 THE PINK RIM DESIGN WAS IN USE AND THESE 'FIRST-OFF-THE-PRESS' COPIES OF ELP'S DEBUT ARE BECOMING VERY HARD TO FIND
AND THIS COPY IS IN BEAUTIFUL CONDITION - PROBABLY ONLY EVER PLAYED TWO OR THREE TIMES (if that)
PRESSED WITH THE FIRST ISSUE PINK ISLAND LABELS
MATRIX NUMBERS: ILPS 9132 A-2U / ILPS 9132 B-1U
MOTHERS/STAMPERS: 2/T and 1/GR
THE RECORD IS HOUSED IN THE ORIGINAL MATT SLEEVE "Printed and made by the EJ Day Group, London and Bedford"
COMPLETE WITH THE ORIGINAL PLAIN WHITE INNER SLEEVE WITH UK PATENT NUMBER AND "MADE IN GREAT BRITAIN" TEXT PRINTED IN GREY
Lively, ambitious and entirely successful debut album, made up of keyboard-dominated instrumentals ("The Barbarian," "Three Fates") and romantic ballads ("Lucky Man") highlighting all three members' very daunting talents
The album showcased the group at its least pretentious and most musicianly and it shows the beginnings of a dark, savage, imposingly gothic edge that had scarcely been seen before in so-called "art rock," mostly courtesy of Emerson's larger-than-life organ and synthesizer attacks.
Greg Lake's beautifully sung, deliberately archaic "Lucky Man" had a brush with success on FM radio, and Carl Palmer became the idol of many thousands of would-be drummers based on this one album (especially for "Three Fates" and "Tank"), but Emerson emerged as the overpowering talent here.
An extremely impressive, powerful debut
Side 1: The Barbarian / Take a Pebble / Knife Edge
Side 2: The Three Fates: Clotho-Lachesis-Atropos / Tank / Lucky Man
LABELS: NEAR MINT
Clean, bright and fresh labels which have lost none of their strong vibrant pink colour and have just two/three light spindle traces
VINYL Visual: EXCELLENT
Both vinyl surfaces retain their original deep glossy sheen and apart from one or two light brush marks (which have no audio consequence) and a pin-point white dot on Side One (present since manufacture) which does sound - albeit briefly, the surfaces shine like new
VINYL Audio: EXCELLENT
Play-checked at loud volume the sound performance is sensational - strong, sharp, rich and warm and incredibly immediate.
The white spot mentioned above (at the beginning of 'Take A Pebble') gives rise to 3 pops as it is passed over otherwise, it plays with little to fault - no scratches and no groove-wear (this copy has barely been played).
The quiet sections of 'Take A Pebble' and 'Tank' are exceptionally clean and the strong piano on 'The Three Fates' shows no signs of distortion (which can be a common problem).
Overall, a beautiful copy of this rare first Pink Island pressing - not perfect, but in my experience just about as good as it gets - great stuff
SLEEVE: VERY GOOD++
A fine example of this easily worn and ring-marked sleeve.
It does display a little 'ring' but really very little and there are some light marks to the front and rubbing to the edges but it is good and solid
ALL RECORDS ARE PACKAGED WITH THE VINYL OUTSIDE OF THE SLEEVE TO PREVENT ANY 'KNIFING' DURING TRANSIT
A PROTECTIVE POLY SLEEVE, NEW INNER SLEEVE WITH ANTI-STATIC LINER, QUALITY BOX (NOT ENVELOPE) MAILER AND AMPLE STIFFENERS ARE ALWAYS USED TO ENSURE THAT YOUR RECORD ARRIVES SAFELY
