Zombies and atomic monsters were perfectly reasonable company in Roky Erickson's Austin, especially after the 13th Floor Elevators singer returned from Rusk State Hospital and formed The Aliens. The Evil One, restored here in its complete 1981 form, gives those creatures suitably nasty surroundings. 'Two Headed Dog' has guitars sawing against those hard and charging drums; 'I Walked With A Zombie' is funnier, Erickson chanting the title with magnificent dead-eyed persistence over a riff that barely changes because, really, why should it? Stu Cook's production leaves the whole thing hard and wiry. This is great Texas rock, with one foot firmly in the crypt.
