THE HEART of ERNANI.the cast ------ernani...mario berini,tenor/elvira...lyda betti,soprano/don carlos...willial hirschfeld,baritone/silva...garon gifford,bass.REGENT 5000 printed in USA.The opera ERNANI,by Giuseppe Verdi,with words by Francesco Piave,and based onVictor Hugo's drama,Hernani,was a product of the composer's 31st year,havig had its initial production at the Teatro Fenice,Venice,March 9,1844.It was first given in the United States on april 15,1847 at the Park Theater,New YorkCity,and was the first grand opera to be produced in San Francisco,the year being 1853.The opera didnot come to the Metropolitan until January 28,1903,when it was given with Marcella Sembrich,Enrico de Marchi,Antonio Scotti,and Edouard de Reszke in the leads,with Luigi Mancinelli conducting.Itwas revived in 1921 for Rosa Ponselle,Giovanni Martinell,Giuseppe Danise,and Jose Mardones,andwas heard there for the last time in the 1928-29 season with Ponselle,Martinelli,Titta Ruffo,and Ezio Pinza.ERNANI was a tremendous success at its premiere.It abounds in the savagery and power of the young Verdi,and its boundless melodies poured forth from his inspired pen.
