E.T.MENSAH & HIS TEMPO'S BAND 'No 2' Decca WAL 1002, 10 track MONO 1952 vinyl LP. E.T.Mensah was known throughout West Africa as 'The King of Highlife' and is certainly the most influential musixcian in the development and history of highlife. Born 1919 in Accra, after he left school he helped his brother Yerbuah form the Accra Rhythmic Orchestra and then went on to join the 'seminal' Black & White Spots. After the war he then joined Guy Warren's Tempos Band which E.T reorganised under his leadership in 1948. His first record came out in 1952 and the band became Ghana's top highlife outfit. This LP 'No 2' is his second and I am also listing 'School Girl' his second. Any of his early material is very hard to find and commands big prices. Mensah says that in his music ' I seek the combination of the virile African beat with the rich European chords'.

Record: G .  I've cleaned the record and looked at it both in daylight and artificial. By daylight I can see a small light scratch on track 1, side 1 going into track 2  and ditto on side 2. By artificial light there appears to be more marks. I'll grade it good only but you may find that apart from the daylight blemishes it plays through fine. It's not too bad for over 70 years of age. Paper sleeve: Clean and good, has a corner crease. Cover:Generally bright and good. Some laminate lift and about 3 creases, edge wear.Reverse is toned and mottled. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ WHAT'S COMING UP! Firstly, on behalf of my brother-in-law's family thank you for your interest and for buying his LPs. What's shortly planned is to put around 20 generally Nigerian LP records up for auction. Some are rare including a real rarest gem. Keep checking though they won't go on until September. Fitting in with this will be the listing of around 100 African cassettes many not available on any other format. Please be sure to read ALL the following: I am bringing to Ebay my brother-in-law's 30-40 year old collection of African and, later, other music genres. Sadly, after a difficult time, he passed away a few months ago and the proceeds from the sale of his music will all be going to his immediate family. I am not keeping anything except the postage which will be at cost. He was a lovely man and sorely missed by everyone. A visit to their home would inevitably include listening to a small part of his music collection, some more 'far out' than others as he had a wide taste. He always said that the record collectors he met were really friendly and perhaps some of his collection will pass on to people he knew. Anyway, music deserves to find a good home and over the next few weeks/months I'll see if I can add to your collection. I was also interested in African music but had generally washed up on the soukous/highlife shore whilst he was particularly interested in Nigerian Afrobeat/Juju and Fuji.
There will be some interesting things coming along. Apart from LPs there are cassettes to be listed as well. Because I will only have the time to list in smallish batches please keep checking my listings regularly as some items will not hang around on the site for long.
Grading the records:  Some years ago I sold my LPs and the means of playing them so I haven't played any of the records listed. When I sold my collection I looked across the LP in a bright light and listed any marks/scratches that could be seen. This seemed to work and there were no complaints. I'll tend to make things sound worse than they are in order that there are no disappointments. All records I will call  VG, even if appearing mint, and will note faults.
As you know if you come across a record you want the chances are that you may never see another copy so you buy it and hope for the best. My brother-in-law bought new but also a lot of second hand records so there is no idea of how many hands it has been through. But, if you remember that they are 40-60 years old then it isn't surprising if they have issues.
Postage: In UK I will only send out with tracking / signature with Royal Mail. Generally Tracked 48.Thanks to Ebay's 'improvements' I will normally list the postage as 'free' because I don't want any buyer postage and selecting EVRI-too many problems. The items will be sent in professional record packaging which can hold 3 LPs for the postage cost of 1 if the value is less than £150. Items above this amount will be insured and be sent by Parcelforce.  I get proof of postage for all items. If you order more than 1 item in the same package, and there are postage savings, I will refund the over amount to you.
 For example 3 items totalling less than £150 in the same package will save you £8 ! Worth thinking about......
