Description
Here is blues queen TRIXIE SMITH, with "Fletcher Henderson's Orchestra," in what SHOULD have been an epochal record of "EVERYBODY LOVES MY BABY" and "HOW COME YOU DO ME LIKE YOU DO." The date was January, 1925. Trixie was in fine voice; the invincible Henderson band, known to insiders as "The New York Yankees of Jazz," included Louis Armstrong, Coleman Hawkins and Buster Bailey, and was sounding better than ever.
But here's the rub: Although the record is labeled "Fletcher Henderson and his Orchestra," the band accompanying Trixie is really THE ORIGINAL MEMPHIS FIVE! How this quintet of white jazzers came to sub for the baddest Black big band on the planet is, alas, by now, anybody's guess. But there they are: PHIL NAPOLEON (cornet), MIFF MOLE (trombone), JIMMY LYTELL (clarinet) FRANK SIGNORELLI (piano), JACK ROTH (drums). Not a bad band! Not slouchy in the least! No doubt about it! Nosirree! Can't say a word against 'em! But compared to Fletcher Henderson and his take-no-prisoners murderers row??
Anyway, Trixie warbles her heart out, especially in this rendition of the brand-new "Everybody Loves My Baby," and the band, as I've said, is excellent. But Phil Napoleon himself would have readily admitted that he was no Louis Armstrong!
This original violet-label Paramount 12249 weighs in, condition-wise, at VV-. Somewhat scuffed and worn, but still very satisfying musically. There's a mysterious divot in the surface of "How Come," impacting a corner of the label and a little bit of the dead wax. Looks like a tiny meteorite plowed into it. But no grooves are touched, thankfully.
