Evil: “Whatcha Gonna Do About It/Always Running Around” on Living Legend LL-108
I’m loathe to using clichés when listing records, but whatta heck, here we go…IT’S HOLY GRAIL TIME!!! Primo two-sided garage-poonk/r&b-blast in its original unedited version! Arguably one of the greatest 45’s to ever be unleashed from the The Sunshine State (doesn't sound like there's too many sunny, happy feelings inside these fellas, though! Thank God.), and that’s sayin’ sumptin’!
“Whatcha” is of course a cover of the Small Faces-hit, which knocks the original to a pulp with enough attitude, balls-out-fuzz and feedback-attack to knock the MC5 flat on their kiesters. And is it just me, or does Jeff Allen shatter his bass-drum after the solo…? “Always” is a superb 100 mph jangly original written by Stan Kinchen with lotsa screams, which is just as insane as the much-hailed A-side. In a way, this one reminds me a lot of Ralph Nielsen & The Chancellors "Scream"!
In a flash of momentarily insanity, Capitol picked this one up for national release, edited out parts of the feedback-driven solo, and shaved away a lot of the local release’s aural oomph in the process. This is the original un-edited release though, which is the only version you need. Also, be sure to pick up the recently released, staggeringly frothing “From A Curbstone/Short Life” from the very same Evil-dudes on Feathered Apple Records, which even threatens to give The Stooges an amphetamine-fuelled run for their money! Oh, heck...I guess you can say I’m a fan…
Both sides have some deeper scuffs and feel-able lines, and also a pretty hefty amount of fine dust in the grooves. There’s also some smudging on both sides, mostly on the B-side. A professional clean-up would do this one a big favor, me thinks. The labels on both sides look relatively OK, with some spindle-marks on the “Always”-side only. “Whatcha” plays a strong VG, while “Always” plays G+ to VG-, because of constant “whooshing” in the background. As a whole, this is graded a weak VG
