Description

Up for bid is the 4 minute Edison Blue Amberol Concert Series cylinder record #28106 "Ave Maria", sung beautifully by Marie Rappold with Albert Spalding on violin, along with piano accompaniment. Released in 1912, this record is in excellent condition. Plays well and sounds good. It comes in one of the more unique Blue Amberol Concert boxes, with original lid. The original lid label had been taped over and is very faded, so a copy of it will be sent with the record.

Ave Maria is based on Johann Sebastian Bach’s Prelude No. 1 in C major from the first volume of his collection, The Well-Tempered Clavier. Some 137 years after Bach wrote his original Prelude, the Ave Maria was first published in 1853 under the title, Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach . The piece superimposes a melodic line over Bach’s piece, which - in the vocal versions - carries the Ave Maria words. The adaptation is usually attributed to the French Romantic composer Charles Gounod.
