For your consideration is a rare vintage 10 inch Edison diamond disc entitled Carmen b/w Aida by the American Concert Orchestra. This is an Edison 24 minute long playing record, which was the very first microgroove long playing record commercially released. Pathe experimented with commercial long playing records in Europe earlier by making gigantic discs, but this product was the very first to use very small grooves to squeeze more music onto a regular size disc. Victor would also begin releasing their program transcription product within a few years of Edison, which worked by using 33 1/3 RPM speed, which had already been employed by Vitaphone and the movie industry in the 20s. Western Electric was also expirimenting with combining both slower speed and microgroove tech by the time the long playing Edison product was released, and the combined tech would appear by around 1934 on products such as Western's Wide Range Sound System radio transcription discs. On the other hand, Edison's insistence on maintaining the higher speed so he could capture finer details in the grooves and maintain better fidelity, meant that his discs needed 4x smaller grooves than a standard 78, and more than 2x smaller than a standard Diamond Disc. This required the machine to manually move the needle along the record with perfect precision, which meant expensive machines and reproducer attachment add ons. Furthermore, if the turntable was not totally level the heavy tonearm could go skating across the record and ruin the microscopic grooves immediately, and any small amount of dust would sound incredibly noisy. Needless to say this product barely sold at all and copies are quite scarce today. Excellent example!

Keep in mind that for the highest fidelity reproduction results, a correct sized, well maintained stylus should always be used and antique records should also always receive a deep cleaning with a stiff bristled brush and a non-alcohol based soap. I do not provide grading beyond what is required by eBay. All 78 rpm records, vinyl or shellac, will be shipped sandwiched between either thick cardboard or some spare 78 rpm discs to provide substantial reinforcement for uneven pressure placed on a package during shipment. The record sandwich is then suspended in packing peanuts on all sides. Packing peanuts are the optimal durable memory material as they will insulate your item against any acute forces such as a fall or any type of blow and unlike bubble wrap will not pop and lose their shape if subjected to a strong force.
