Up for sale is a very rare Edison Diamond Disc record featuring two great songs by one of the most popular singing groups of the 1920s.
Artist: The Four Aristocrats Label: Edison Record Record Number 52027 Date: Circa 1927 L-Side: 52027-L (11704) "That's The Reason Why I Wish I Was In Dixie" (Singing and Instrumental) (Wm. Tracey & Dan Dougherty) The faint wax matrix mark on this side reads: -11704-C-1-7 R-Side: 52027-R (11705) "Me and My Shadow" (Singing and Instrumental) (Billy Rose - Al Jolson - Dave Dreyer) The faint wax matrix mark on this side reads: -11705-A-1-5The Four Aristocrats were composed of vaudeville stars, including Bert Bennett, Eddie Lewis, Tom Miller, and Fred Weber. They appeared in some of the earliest "talkies" movies, including four shorts in the series "Vitaphone Varieties" (Warner Brothers).
The ever popular "Me and My Shadow" was a brand new song in 1927, when this recording was likely made. Although Al Jolson is credited for this song, my research indications that most feel he made only a token contribution. Billy Rose was the lyricist and Dave Dreyer the composer.
