Description
Collectors, here is an amazing disc, Edison Diamond Disc 52427, circa spring 1929. This is almost certainly an electrical recording. Two hymns performed by the Metropolitan Quartet (Esther Nelson, Amy Ellerman, Charles Hart and Donald Chalmers): "I Will Magnify Thee, O God" and "O Lord, How Manifold Are Thy Works", with organ or orchestra. Fine renditions, you will enjoy both sides. "Magnify" was released as Blue Amberol cylinder #5674. The record plays well with fairly limited surface noise. There are no edge chips, and the labels are glued tightly to the record.
Wow, this is right at the end of Edison Land! The highest number cylinder issued was #5719. The highest number Diamond Disc was #52629. Edison stopped issuing records and cylinders in the early summer of 1929, and the business was closed on October 31, 1929. The records had small runs and distribution, there were few dealers left and Edison sold records right from the New Jersey factory. Any records remaining at the Edison factory were destroyed in 1930. So, this record had only a few months for sale. Existing copies would be those sales and records in jobbers and dealer stock in 1929. How many are left 93 years after issuance? I think the answer has to be "not many"! If this is what you like and need, don't pass it up. My price is reasonable given the record's rarity, go for it!
