Elkie Brooks – ‘The Way You Do The Things You Do’ / ‘Blue Tonight’ – Decca F. 12061 d (UK)
Released in 1964, some six or seven years before she formed Vinegar Joe with Robert Palmer, ‘The Way You Do The Things You Do’, a cover of the Temptations’ first hit, was Elkie’s third single. A friend of the Beatles and the Small Faces, Elkie must have had a ball recording this mod classic, and her version is a knock-out. Producer Ian Samwell’s mod track record is immaculate, too; he was an R&B DJ and co-wrote the Small Faces’ 1965 hit ‘Whatcha Gonna Do About It’. In the seventies he discovered America – the group, that is – and produced their first album (including ‘A Horse With No Name’). The single under consideration here comes in its most desirable format, a Decca demo dated January 22, 1965 in near mint nick. Don’t miss it!

Shipping from Sweden is expensive – though the rest of the world is surely catching up – not least due to the fact that the weight increments are few and far apart, but it’s usually swift and safe.
