Description
This is the extremely rare 1959 deluxe autographed limited-edition version of the Ella Fitzgerald Sings the George and Ira Gershwin Songbooks box set. This one is numbered 159 out of 200 and is signed by Ella Fitzgerald, Ira Gershwin, George Gershwin (thanks to a check obtained from his estate), Nelson Riddle and artist Bernard Buffet. It boasts five 12" LPs and one 7", all stored in a beautiful, mid-century modern, hinged, blonde walnut clamshell case which boasts leather pockets for each record, each embossed with a gold image of the album artwork (though some have faded/worn away a little). I didn't want to touch the records too much but they look like they have never before been touched. Some have the album number (Verve 4024-28) etched in the center. The dust jackets for the records are vintage promotional material for Verve records.
In addition, it comes with the Gershwins, Words Upon Music book, which seems to have never been opened until I photographed it. There is a little squishing on the spine.
The five autographs are each on their own piece of paper that were mounted to a page, but some have come loose. The autographs are in great condition though and it is mind-boggling to think that something touched by Ella Fitzgerald, George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin is sitting in front of you. They are stored in an embossed hand numbered paper folio that is also signed by producer Norman Granz.
The exterior of the case has some scratches and light marks, and the top part of the latch needs to be re-adhered to the upper portion of the case. The inside of the case looks great.
The original box is not part of this set, and the lithographs that originally came with it aren't in there either.
The case measures about 18" by 14" by 2.5"
