DJM label. Cat. No. DJX 501
Promo 7" that comes in a gatefold sleeve with 'Advance Promotion Copy' and large 'A' on the A side label, and 'Advance Promotion Copy' on the B side label. Has 'Rocket Man' on the A side, and Holiday Inn / Goodbye on the B side.
CONDITION
Examined under a strong halogen lamp, both sides have a scattering of scratches to varying degree, some 'feelable'. A visual grade of Good.
When played on a Pro-ject Debut III turntable (recently balanced tone arm and replaced stylus) it plays with some quiet 'clicks' in places and some loud crackle, that is mostly heard at the start of each side but fades slightly as each side progresses and/or when the music gets louder. However, the music still comes through strongly. There are no jumps or sticking. A play-grade of Good but certainly no better.
Both labels are unmarked and just have spindle trails.
The sleeve has creasing, ringwear, some very light soiling, wear to the edges, an ink inscription on the front that someone has tried to erase, and a 1cm split at the top of the spine. Generally, though it is quite intact although there are too many (minor) flaws to grade it better than Fair but I've seen many grade sleeves in this condition as VG.

GOOD / FAIR
GRADING GUIDE - IMPORTANT!
I visually examine all records under a strong 35w halogen lamp, which shows up ALL defects.
I strictly grade my records according to the Rare Record Price Guide (RRPG) / Record Collector guidelines (with the addition of NM), which, to me, means as follows:
MINT- Must be sealed
NEAR MINT - Totally unmarked, no scratches, not even faint 'hairlines' / sleeve withdrawal marks or any other signs of having been played. I don't use this grade lightly. Whatever people say, such unmarked records DO exist but not nearly as many as others would have you believe with their NM grades.
EXCELLENT - No scratches, just signs of having been played, such as the odd faint 'hairline' sleeve withdrawal mark that is barely visible under a strong lamp.
VERY GOOD - The first mild scratches have begun to appear, but only very, very few.
GOOD - More scratches than Very Good and more severe, but I am confident that the record will play through without skips or sticking and will still provide a good listening experience.
FAIR - The record may not play through properly with a chance of it jumping and / or it will play with significant background noise.
POOR - It definitely won't play without skipping or sticking.
Below Near Mint I will use a plus or minus suffix with a grade to highlight fine differences.
COVER GRADES
I try to ensure that my cover grades are EXACTLY as stated in Record Collector magazine / RRPG. Therefore, if a cover is defaced, stained or torn it CANNOT grade better than FAIR. Likewise, if any part of the contents are missing it CANNOT grade better than POOR. However, if the fault is relatively minor and the rest of the cover is overwhelmingly of a certain grade then I will use this grade.
